What ever happened to the molds of the original SP figures?

The molds to a lot of the SW figures were thrown into the south China Sea when production was done. Well, there are conflicting accounts, but a number of sources indicate that the steel molds were just too expensive to ship anywhere, so they just dumped them. I would imagine that most of the SP molds befell a similar fate.

That is fo course except for Mike's Manbat mold:

A very long overdue bump!

After reading some of the favorite past threads over at RS, it got me thinking. After reading what Tom said about those molds, was it ever confirmed that the SP molds met the same fate?

Is it possible that Tom was able to pick and save some like he did the others?

I know I could ask Tom himself, but figured if maybe someone else already had then he wouldn't have to repeat himself.

I've never asked Tom specifically about the SP molds, but am not aware of him saving any. I do know of one steel Hawkman wing mold that I've been trying to shake loose for a number of years and hope to eventually obtain at some point. That's the only steel mold I'm aware of surfacing for a produced SP figure.

I'm sure they kept them through 1991, when they refurbished some for use in the Robin Hood movie line. The Joker that was refurbished for the Kenner Batman movie line, made another appearance in 1997. About 3-4 years ago, Hasbro 'cleaned house', and instructed their China warehouses to destroy most molds they still had from ALL old toy lines... even GI Joe molds that the fan club had been recently using.

When Mattel got the Batman license, Hasbro leased/sold alot of their Batman molds to them... that's why their first few releases were previous Kenner/Hasbro animated figures, and the Wayne Manor/Batcave. It'd be kooky if they got a SP mold or two...
