Super Powers Customs - Updated Feb 29, 2016

This project has been over a year in the making, not because it was incredibly difficult, although it was that at times, but mostly because time, as with all of us, is short and fitting in hobby stuff is difficult. I also think I made some leaps and bounds in my work which makes everything takes that much long.

I’ll be breaking this up into three posts, twoshowing the figures themselves, and the other showing the carded figures.

The Super Powers toyline, which was originally released between 1984-1986, lasted for three waves and totaled 34 figures, along with vehicles and playsets. As with other Kenner toylines, work began on the 4th wave before before the line was cancelled. Thanks for the work of Jason Geyer we know what Kenner had planned for the 4th wave and beyond ([sign in to see URL]). This is the primary sources I used when picking the characters I’ve included in my 4th wave of figure. Along with that I looked at the 1982 DC Comics Style Guide where all the art (by Jose Luis Garcia Lopez) ([sign in to see URL] and many of the original character selections were taken, and also looked at popular comic series of the time (Justice League International, New Teen Titans, etc.), and from the Super Friends cartoon show where a few characters included in the original line were taken (Samurai, Legion of Doom, etc.). All of that is a way to say, I did some research and while not all of the characters I’ve decided to include are part of Kenner’s Wave 4 presentation, I feel like they fit the aesthetic and time period of the original line and could have been included. So without further ado, here are the figures.

Captain Cold

%20Powers/Wave%204%20for%20Forums/[sign in to see URL]]--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

A member of the Legion of Doom and constant thorn in the Flash’s side. He’s made from a Red Tornado torso, Firestorm Arms, Flash legs, Desadd head, and a Dark Knight Bruce Wayne face. All the fur trim was sculpted by layering individual coils of Sculpey on top of one another. It took a while. I really like how this figure came out, from the sculpting and painting, as well as the recipe (and I have to give credit to a client who put it together in the first place, although I did tweak it a bit). Cold gun is from a Secret Wars gun.

Bizarro

%20Powers/Wave%204%20for%20Forums/Bizarro01%[sign in to see URL]]--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

Another member of the Legion of Doom as well as a perennial Superman foe, and an inclusion in Kenner’s pitch for Wave 4.. Constructed from a Dark Knight Batman torso, Superman head, and limbs from an old Toy Biz Iceman (this was stolen from Ironcow aka Matt Cauly) to make him look a bit blockier. I’m also really happy with how the paint came out on this one. It doesn’t quite match the reference material, but I think it’s pretty striking standing next to Superman. Cape is hand sewn with a clasp made with a 3D printing pen, and the medallion is Sculpey.

The Atom

%20Powers/Wave%204%20for%20Forums/The_Atom01%[sign in to see URL]]--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

Member of the Justice League and present in a few group shots in the 1982 DC Style Guide. This is one figure I’ve wanted to make for a while since I love the Satellite era Justice League. Since this has been completed I’ve tweaked the recipe a bit to eliminate a little bit of sculpting. Made from a Flash torso, legs and head and Green Lantern arms (in the future I’ll add Batman legs as they have the same boots). Pretty simple and straightforward, but looks great with the other Justice Leaguers.

Captain Atom

%20Powers/Wave%204%20for%20Forums/Captain_Atom01%[sign in to see URL]]--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

A member of the Justice League International. His inclusion is dubious, but the 3rd wave included Mr. Miracle and Shazam who were included in the first issue of the revamped Justice League from 1986. Captain Atom came along a little while later, but the fact that he could have easily be vacmetaled (a la Cyborg and Brainiac) makes me think Kenner could have easily included him in the line. He’s made from a Superman figure with a head from a Jurassic Park Muldoon figure. I used chrome spray paint to make him all shiney.

Kid Flash

%20Powers/Wave%204%20for%20Forums/Kid_Flash01%[sign in to see URL]]--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

Kid Flash was shown as part of the proposal for Wave 4. WIth the inclusion of Cyborg in Wave 3 it seemed as though Kenner was going to start including more Teen Titans, which makes sense as it was one of the most popular books at the time. In fact it appears that there was a separate Teen Titans line included in the very early stages of the Super Powers line planning. He’s made from a Flash head, Robin torso and arms, and Firestorm legs which are both bulky and short and fitting for a runner. The hair is from a Toy Biz Juggernaut figure.

Loose figures Part 2

Hawkwoman

%20Powers/Wave%204%20for%20Forums/Hawkwoman01%[sign in to see URL]]--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

Another member of the Satellite era Justice League that was included in the 1982 DC Style Guide. She was not included as part of the proposal but it makes sense for her to be in the line as she rounds out the nearly complete Satellite Justice League. And since there is a severe lack of female characters in the line. Made from a Toy Biz Invisible Girl with a JLU Hawkgirl head, and Hawkman wings. This figure was a big pain and required resculpting, resanding, and repainting multiple times. But I like how she turned out and she looks great next to Hawkman, though she is hard to pose due to the wings.

Reverse Flash

%20Powers/Wave%204%20for%20Forums/Reverse_Flash01%[sign in to see URL]]--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

He was also included in the 4th wave proposal, most likely because he was a simple repaint. Which is exactly what I did, with a little twist. I usually try as much as possible to change hands and heads when possible and feasible as I feel like those are the easiest ways to determine the source figure. While I didn’t change the hands here, and I knew resculpting the mask details would end up looking sloppy, I did want to change the head somewhat to tell them apart, especially since he and Flash they aren’t twins, although they do have a similar body type. So I cut out Flash’s jaw from the nose down and replaced it with the lower jaw from a Dark Knight (Keaton)Batman figure. I think it makes a big difference and makes him look angry without going overboard.

This is a picture comparing the new figure to my very first custom way back in the early 90’s. I’d like the think I’ve come a long way.

Wonder Girl

%20Powers/Wave%204%20for%20Forums/[sign in to see URL]]--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

Another female character that makes complete sense given my reasoning for Kid Flash. Shes made from a Wonder Woman with feet from a Toy Biz Storm figure. I resculpted the hair to fit Donna and to differentiate from Wonder Woman. The lasso is from gold beading string as buying an original lasso was super expensive.

Black Lightning

%20Powers/Wave%204%20for%20Forums/[sign in to see URL]]--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

One of the “ethnic” heroes created for the Super Friends cartoon (along with Samurai, Apache Chief, and El Dorado), he was included in the 4th wave proposal. I created this for last years Hanna Barbara Cartoon contest on the old boards when I realized he fit right in with this project. He’s made from Superman torso and legs, Dr. Fate arms (with the appropriate “lighting casting” hand) and the head from a Congo Monroe figure.

Obsidian

%20Powers/Wave%204%20for%20Forums/[sign in to see URL]]--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

Another entry from Kenner’s 4th wave proposal, although I’m not all that sure why. He’s a hero that looks like a villain, and I don’t believe Infinity, Inc., the series he was featured in, was ever hugely popular, though I could be wrong. Anyway, he’s got a cool costume and I dig the end result. He’s made from a Red Tornado with Aquaman legs and quite a bit of detail sculpting. The cape was hand sewn with a clasp made with a 3D printing pen.

Parasite

Part of a trio of commissions for a client who supplied the parts and the recipes, so I can’t take credit for those. He’s made from a Hawkman torso and arms, a Martian Manhunter head, and Aquaman legs. The “chest line” was sculpted, as were new facial features to make him look more villainous. The challenge here was finding the right purple. It took quite a few tries to make it so he didn’t look like Barney or an eggplant. In the end I’m happy with the color. Nice and simple custom that turned out well.

This last photo also include my custom Bizarro and Metallo (repainted T2 Exoskeleton, not much of a custom, but still...)

Count Vertigo

%20Powers/New%20Super%20Powers%20for%20Forums/Count%20Vertigo%[sign in to see URL]]--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

Second of a series of commissions. He’s made from a Green Lantern with a Flash head. The top of the head was sliced off and hair was sculpted. Green Lantern’s costume details were smoothed out and new details were sculpted on. The big challenge here was the cape. I was provided with a two-tone yellow and black cape from the Batman Returns robin figure.I had to take the cape apart, dye the yellow layer green, and then sew it back together. Luckily my mother is a seamstress was was able to help with the last part. Then I drew on it with a felt tip marker to create the lines. Another somewhat simple sounding custom that had some deceptive challenges.

Amazo

%20Powers/New%20Super%20Powers%20for%20Forums/Amazo%[sign in to see URL]]--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

Third of a series of commissions and one of the most complicated customs I’ve made. The client wanted to use an Aquaman from the belt down to preserve the A belt buckle and marry that with the torso from a Dick Grayson figure from the Batman and Robin movie line. To do this I had to crack both torsos in half, cut the Aquaman off the belt, salvage the power action feature, then wrap the Grayson torso around it. Unfortunately the waist of the Grayson torso was too small so I had to resculpt the abdomen, something I’ve never done before (sculpting musculature is a weak spot for me). I also had to to cut off and reuse the Aquaman neck post to allow the head to still be able to turn. From there the Dr. Fate arms and Lex Luthor head was added on,along with ears from a Toy Biz Green Goblin. Paint the arm and legs bands was an exercise in patience and took way long that I thought it would. The last part for the vest. It’s made from two different colors of spandex which were carefully cut and glued together. These were attached with elastic which I had to dye to match (the thought was to make it similar to the construction of the Samurai vest). All in all it was a lot of work, but I really like the final product.

Clayface

%20Powers/New%20Super%20Powers%20for%20Forums/Clayface%[sign in to see URL]]--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

This was supposed to be a quick fun project while I was waiting to other things to dry. It turned out taking a lot more time than I though, but it was still fun. It’s made from a Swamp Thing for the early 90’s Kenner line, which is nothing new as I’ve seen a bunch of these over the years. I ended up sculpting over the entire figure to make it look mud-like and drippy. The source materials I used was from the Animated series, which doesn’t exactly match up with the time period the Super Powers figures were produced, but it’s much more visually striking. My only regret is the lack of knee joints, but it’s not a huge deal.
