Hi Tony,

I'm going to post an exerpt from my email reply to you just for informational purposes and for reference to help other collectors as well:

quote:

I'm not aware of the all black mock-up having surfaced, but a few similar ones in the other paint schemes did show up many years ago and reside in my personal collection (black/blue mock-up and gold/yellow mock [sign in to see URL] have a maroon/black one as well). Those mock-ups are production Super Powers Batman figures that were hand painted internally at Kenner, probably by designers to convey the overall concept and color schemes. One former Kenner designer explained to me that they were under a considerable time rush with the Dark Knight Collection line, so mock-ups such as these could be kocked out fairly quickly. Similar mock-ups were used on the cardbacks as well if memory serves me correctly.

I didn't know they used the super powers batman for this line. We are talking about the stuff that came out with the Keaton movie right? Mike do you have any pics you can share? So they repainted super powers figures and made new cardback said as a pitch for the line? I found this catalog picture after searching around a bit.

Are these the figures your talking about but they were carded at some point for the pitch?

Hi Bryan,

Yes, Keaton era. The painted Super Powers figures were used as loose photo samples in the TF catalog that you showed and I believe in the photos shown on the cardbacks as well (might be incorrect on that last [sign in to see URL] need to double check). I've never seen carded mock-ups of [sign in to see URL] loose figure mock ups. I don't have photos of the ones in my collection, but the catalog photo shows similar ones nicely. Kenner used a bunch of existing tooling for the backpacks and accessories in this line (Sky Commanders, Police Academy, Silverhawks, ect)...even Robocop cycles repurposed and modified a bit for the Batman and Joker cycles. They almost used a modified SP Batmobile!

Thanks Mike. I don't know why, but I associate the phrase Mock up as being a carded item. I didn't realize Mock Up could mean a prototype figure of some sort as I just thought that would be called a prototype or first shot (or bench shot or ep or [sign in to see URL] the names for some of these type things are endless these days)

Guess I need to study up on some definitions.

Here's a Dark Knight Batman prototype made/mocked up from Super Powers Batman hardcopy parts (torso/arm)

--Log in or sign up to see linked image content--

The cowl and belt buckle have been modified/updated with wax.

The head & legs are hardcopies based on the new Dark Knight sculpt.
