U-grades and AFA

Quick question, I have seen the ugrades from AFA in the past for figures that were sent in and taken off the card and then graded loose. (I am not a proponent of this but don't want to start a debate on the good or bad) My question is today I saw a U-grade assigned to a card that was unpunched. Has anyone seen this before? Why is it a u-grade? was it from a sealed case that was opened and that made this a U-grade?

Here is the link to the auction:

If the link needs to be removed then let me know or if I don't get to it Mike can remove it.

I saw that too.
My best guess is
1. That it was removed from a sealed case
2. AFA screwed up (wouldn't be the first time, but again no debate).

This is definitely from a sealed case, so that is why it received the U grade. I've seen it plenty of times on other toys that originated from sealed cases that were sent to AFA.

Learn something new everyday. So u-grade does not always mean opened card, it can mean opened case. I was unaware of that. I wonder if like the u grade is achieved for the opened figure you have to send the figure in sealed for them to open, is it the same for this? So you have to send in a sealed case to get a u grade. How many figures came in a shipping case for super powers? Seems that the grading cost would be incredibly high since they would all have to be graded at once.

That is correct that you must send in a sealed case to achieve the U grade on a carded figure or boxed vehicle/playset. I believe, but am not positive, that you may be able to have them pre-screened and only have nice ones cased/[sign in to see URL] might be wrong about that aspect though. Standard assortments of Super Powers figures contained 24 figures per shipping case. Some things shipped in solid cases though like Darkseid. I'm pretty sure those Kenner Canada Shazam's originated from straight one figure assortment overstock cases.

Re: U-grades and AFA

It's from a sealed case that was opened by AFA. I know that for some reason, there were surplus cases of sealed Canadian Shazam figures and some were sent to AFA to be opened and have the individual carded figures graded with the U grade. I know a dealer who submitted at least one case.

I have a couple U-graded boxed Super Powers toys. A Batmobile that came from a sealed case that I bought in that condition, as well as a Supermobile that came from a sealed mixed case of Supermobiles and Lex Soar-7's that I submitted to AFA myself.

I got my sealed case last year from a toy wholesaler in Jordan (for real!) who surfaced a few of these (some sealed, some not) and sold on E-Bay last year.

I was able to reduce the grading fees by having them screen the boxes once the case was opened. My instructions were if the boxed vehicles would grade at 85 or better, then complete the grading process and case that box (netted me two U85 Supermobiles) and leave the rest ungraded/uncased (the other four vehicles on the case).
