Caution: Flash Prototype on Ebay

Hi Everyone,

Just wanted give everyone a heads up about the following piece on eBay:

[url][sign in to see URL]

I'm extremely suspicious of this piece's authenticity. It makes very little sense for a full production piece like this to exhibit an entire hand painted coating like this. The red is much darker than anything SP related and does not show up on any authentic painted flash prototypes. Hand painted logos also don't typically show up on painted SP prototypes either. At any rate, just wanted to give everyone a heads up about the concern related to this piece.

Interesting it looks like the red was painted over a black base coat or black plastic. Isn't this the ebay seller associated with Hake's auctions?

Mike, wouldn't a true prototype be missing a copyright date and peg holes on the bottom of the feet?

Looks like someone just custom painted a regular production figure.

I think that seller is pretty bad news anyway with some suspicious bidding patterns that appear to be fairly obvious shilling.

Aaron, yes a hardcopy would lack dates and peg holes. This is an injection molded piece for sure, so definitely not a hardcopy.

I agree it appears to have a black base coat since you can see the original red coming through in the peg hole openings.

I agree that it's definitely not a Kenner prototype. I still think it looks kind of cool. emoticon

I emailed and asked about the history of this figure and got no response. Somebody walked away with a very expensive custom IMO.

They did reply after the auction had ended.

"This figure is an authentic preproduction piece and came from a collection that we purchased from a collector of Batman and Super Powers action figures and toys. There were numerous Batman prototype action figures in the collection as well as a smaller amount of Super Powers figures. This is one of those figures. We hope that this information helps to answer your question properly. Thank you for your interest in our auction items. We appreciate it."

The only thing I could think for this, and it's a big maybe for that kind of money, is that maybe this figure was used by Toy Biz as a mock-up for when they won the license to make DC figures. While a repainted Flash never appeared on the back of their packaging, repaints of Batman, Robin, Joker, and others most certainly did, and the reds on the Superman and Robin mock-ups definitely looked darker than the Kenner production figures.

I was interested in this figure because I thought it looked cool, and for the slim possibility that it might've been that.
