Super Powers 30th Anniversary figures!

So, Rich posted in another thread about the Toy Fair reveals from a few hours ago, and to sum up it looks like Mattel is going to release a six figure wave of figures on Super Powers-like cardbacks. After the last five figures are released this year from the Club Infinite Earths Signature Collection, these anniversary figures represent the last figures Mattel will be making that are comic-book styled/Four Horsemen sculpted 6" DC figures. It looks like they will be continuing on with the Total Heroes line, which is aimed for both kids and collectors, and are exclusively based of the New 52 designs. They're calling this the Super Powers Collection. I know how some of you feel about the newer stuff, but you guys know I'm huge into the 6" Horsemen comic line. I know Rich and I'm guessing at least Phil will probably pick these up, and I'd be willing to bet Rasoul won't be able to resist either - so I thought I'd make the definitive resource thread to help you guys track down any of the other figures you might decide to go back and pick up. Here we go!

1.) Superman - simply a repaint (from the sculpt combo first released with the Wal-Mart exclusive "Gotham City 5") featuring his lighter blue SP duds...Supes will be released in September.

2.) Batman - A repaint of the DC Universe Classics wave one Crime-Stopper Batman or Classic Detective Batman (depending on which package you got), Bats is also in a color scheme more closely matching his SP figure. Set to be released in September.

3.) Wonder Woman - This figure first appeared in wave four of DCUC. This repaint has her gold accents repainted yellow to evoke a more SP-like appearance. Also set to be released in September.

4.) Flash - He first appeared in wave seven of DCUC on the smaller buck that I prefer for imitating his SP figure, but you can find his All-Star release a bit more plentifully. The only difference is that the All-Star release used the larger male buck that Batman and Superman were released on.

5.) Brainiac - He was released way back in 2006 as part of Mattel's DC Superheroes line. This was before they got the rights to do the whole DC universe proper, so this precursor line to DCUC only featured Batman and Superman characters. He was never released again.

6.) Penguin - He was released fairly recently as part of the Batman Unlimited line. Should be easy to track down.

7.) Joker - Part of DCUC wave ten's Wal-Mart exclusive Imperiex wave, he was also re-released as an All-Star.

8.) Aquaman - Part of DCUC's wave two, he was also re-released in a TRU exclusive two-pack with Masters of the Universe Classics' Merman. The only difference is that his belt is gold instead of yellow on the two-pack version. Obviously the wave two version is closer to his SP figure. The same sculpt was also released with Black Manta in a Wal-Mart exclusive two-pack, but his shirt is all pearlescent and weird. Be warned!

9.) Robin - Released in DCUC's wave 16, the figure has a variant with the same body featuring a golden age head sculpt. Be careful to get the one with the 70's/80's Dick Grayson head sculpt.

10.) Lex Luthor - Originally released in the DC Superheroes line, he was re-released in a DCUC two-pack with Supergirl, and a two-pack with Skeletor. As far as I can tell there are no differences between the three releases other than accessories.

11.) Green Lantern - Originally released in DCUC wave three, Hal has been re-released a bazillion times. My extensive research has shown that the wave three one is the closest to the SP figure. There may be a straight All-Star re-release of this exact figure, but I have not seen it. All of the re-releases I have seen feature changes ranging from minuscule to glaring. Be careful!

12.) Hawkman - Released in DCUC wave 6, he was re-released in a TRU exclusive two-pack with Masters of the Universe Classics Stratos. No differences between the two other than the two-pack version doesn't come with his sword and shield. It still has his mace, however, so that's the one I use.

13.) Steppenwolf - He was a variant to the comic version of Steppenwolf released in wave 11 of DCUC. Easy to find.

14.) Martian Manhunter - Released in the K-Mart exclusive wave 15 of DCUC, he was later re-released as an All-Star.

15.) Doctor Fate - Released in DCUC wave eight, he is quite rare. He has a variant that is much rarer.

16.) Firestorm - Released in wave two of DCUC, and believe it or not re-released as an All-Star (or World's Greatest Super Hero). He had a running change variant, so be sure to get our beloved Ronnie Raymond.

17.) Green Arrow - Released in wave nine of DCUC, he was re-released as an All-Star or WGSH.

18.) Red Tornado - He was in the first wave of DC Universe Classics.

19.) Darkseid - There are two ways to go with this figure, depending on your taste. I have both. He was released as a smaller single carded figure in DC Superheroes (be careful, also repainted in black), which I think goes a bit better with the Super Powers Collection. He was also DCUC's wave 12 Collect-and-Connect figure, in a much larger incarnation. Both are awesome, up to you.

20.) Desaad - Part of DCUC wave 12.

21.) Kalibak - The six different pieces of him are set to be released with the six new Super Powers Collection figures coming out this fall. Buy them all and build him!

22.) Mantis - He was a variant in DCUC wave nine of the comic styled version.

23.) Parademon - He was a variant in DCUC wave eight of the comic styled version.

24.) Clark Kent - This figure was only available as part of a DC Superheroes two-pack with Superman.

25.) Shazam - Available in wave 6 of DCUC.

26.) Cyborg - Available in wave 4 of DCUC, later re-released as a variant (with a sonic cannon) as a KB Toys exclusive.

27.) Mister Miracle - Offered in wave 6 of DCUC.

28.) Plastic Man - This figure was 2011's SDCC exclusive DCUC figure.

29.) Orion - Available in wave one of DCUC, he was re-released in a TRU exclusive two-pack with Lightray. The two-pack version has a removable helmet, which may be preferable to SP collectors. This will be the only figure that isn't styled like his SP counterpart.

30.) Golden Pharaoh - Released in the same K-Mart exclusive wave with Martian Manhunter, DCUC wave 15.

31.) Samurai - Finally released in DCUC wave 18.

32.) Mr. Freeze - While there were several released, the one more closely styled to match the SP version is from the DCUC subset Batman Legacy.

33.) Tyr - Released in DCUC's Wal-Mart exclusive wave 14.

So there you have it, guys! Personally, I also got the DCUC wave 16 Riddler and the DCUC wave 10 black Batman (also re-released as an All-Star) to go with my Super Powers remake collection.

Mattel will also be releasing a Gold Superman, a Green Lantern as Riddler, and a Mr. Mxyzsptlk in this new Super Powers collection.

If anyone has anything more to add, please do - and feel free to ask me any questions!

Awesome resource, thanks!

So Nate would you open these if you get them or leave them moc? Kind of a tough call with the build a figure kalibak.

Great job Nate! Very thorough! It'll be interesting to see super powers-esq packaging in the stores again! My gut tells me I'll pass on these, but it will definitely bring a smile to my face to see this beloved packaging art on the shelves at my local toy stores. emoticon

I have to admit, even though I'm not a fan of SP Kalibak, he looks pretty awesome here!

Rich, I think I will be compelled to open them for Kalibak and for the fact that my current collection is all open. I thought about leaving Gold Superman and GL Riddler carded for the wall, but I'll need to see exactly how they are packaged - and if the Kalibak pieces are easily accessible. I may end up getting two sets, as bad as I hate to say it.

I'm torn. I usually open my modern figures. But, to me at least, the point of collecting these is the retro packaging. But I also want that Kalibak figure. I really don't want to buy 2 sets of these. Oh well, I will probably have to see how much the Kalibaks are on the bay I guess.

AFI has a first look at what the cardbacks are going to look like for these guys, or at least the regular Superman one. They look pretty great IMO.
