New Acquisition: "Estrela" Plasticman MOC

Hi Gang,

During eBay searches throughout the years, many of you have probably been exposed to the myriad of existing international Super Powers carded figures produced by various companies for distribution in non-US countries. Figures from the South American companies Pacipa and Playful represent the two most commonly seen international carded figures found on Ebay (not including Kenner Canada carded examples). The lower quality Gulliver small carded figures also surface from time to time. A fourth company, Estrela, also distributed Super Powers figures in South America and represents the most infrequently seen of these four companies.

The figure quality on the Estrela cards is extremely satisfactory, rivaling the quality of the Kenner carded action figures. According to the cardback, a total of 17 figures were released by this company; the entire twelve figure first series line-up accompanied by two second series characters (Darkseid and Green Arrow), and three third series characters (Cyborg, Shazam, and Plasticman). Additinally, four vehicles are shown on the Estrela cardbacks: Supermobile, Batmobile, Delta Probe-1, and Batcopter.

Although I personally have not seen carded examples of all 17 characters, I remain optimistic that they were released. To date I have acquired 3 of the 17 in carded form for my personal collection, the latest being Plastic Man (Homem Borracha), pictured at the following two links:

]Estrela Plasticman MOC (front)

]Estrela Plasticman MOC (back)

The most exciting aspect of the Estrela Plasticman is the inclusion of his mini-comic. Remember, Kenner and Kenner Canada 3rd series cards did not feature the mini-comic premium. The Estrela carded Plasticman, and presumably Cyborg and Shazam if released, represents the only method of obtaining the mini-comic for this 3rd series character.

Although my searches for Estrela carded Super Powers figures have been haphazard at best during previous years, I am now increasing my search efforts in order to:

a) continue documenting as many existing/released characters on the Estrela cards

b) bring my Estrela carded collection as close to completion as possible.

I'm extremely excited about this recent acquisition, so I figured I'd share my enthusiam and accompanying photos with forum members.

Thats a pretty neat item. Thanks for the pics and the info about that company.

Have you ever seen loose version of those figures? Wonder are they marked in anyway different - like SW figures are.

I've never checked to see whether the COO/copyright info matches the Kenner counterparts, so that's a question I can't answer at this time. It's a good question though. :^)

Every good question needs an answer, and I'm happy to say I can now answer the question regarding the difference in markings on the Estrela figures. :^) They are indeed different in that the markings are located on the back of the torsos and say "Estrela S.A".

Hehe, no worries as my Plasticman is still safe and sealed on his card. ;^) A friend of mine pointed me towards photo documentation that illustrated the markings on a few loose Estrela figures.
